In Avengers: Infinity War, Red Skull told Thanos, “In order to take the stone, you must lose that which you love. A soul for a soul…”. As a result of this, Thanos sacrificed his daughter Gamora for the Soul Stone. In Avengers: Endgame, the same sacrifice was made by Black Widow so that Hawkeye could get the Soul Stone. Some of you may have been thinking that she may come back as a result of Cap returning the Soul Stone to Vormir, isn’t it? Well, that’s not the case as Joe Russo confirmed that Black Widow is gone forever and is not coming back to life.
Avengers: Endgame Director Joe Russo confirms Black Widow is gone forever
In Endgame’s China Press Tour, Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo confirmed that both Gamora and Black Widow are gone forever as the sacrifice made for getting the Soul Stone cannot be reversed. You can check out the tweet below for the same:
Joe Russo clarified the soul stone’s rules during #Endgame’s China press tour — ‘The process is irreversible … The tribute soul for the soul stone will forever be sealed in that place, therefore Black Widow is gone forever’

Although Gamora and Black Widow are gone, they will probably return. Scarlett Johansson has been confirmed to produce and star in the Black Widow first solo movie. It will be a prequel that will be set in and around the same time as Captain Marvel. Similarly, Gamora is likely(not confirmed) to star in Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 3. Though the Gamora in that movie will not be the present Gamora. Instead, she will be the 2014 Gamora who may be stranded in this timeline due to the time travel in Avengers: Endgame.
